Trolling will get worse before it gets better

If you thought that the internet had a chance of becoming a nicer place at any point in the near future, it might be time to give up hope.

“Harassment, trolls, and an overall tone of griping, distrust, and disgust” will stay the norm on the internet over the next decade, experts told the Pew Research Center in a new report

The Pew Research Center and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University surveyed about 1,500 technology experts, scholars, corporate practitioners and government leaders in July and August 2016 for the study, and the results are pretty demoralizing.

Forty-two percent of respondents thought the internet would stay the same sometimes less-than-pleasant place over the next 10 years, while another 39 percent said they thought the internet would become a more negative environment. Just under 20 percent of experts thought the internet had any chance of getting better over the next decade when it comes to harassment and trolling.  Read more…

Reddit user created a mind-blowing theory to fill a big ‘Beauty and the Beast’ plot hole

It’s a theory as old as time.

The live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast has stayed true to the source material for the most part. But, the movie does contain some new twists and turns in order to distinguish itself from its cartoon predecessor.

Warning: if you haven’t seen the movie already there are minor spoilers ahead.

At the end film it is revealed that the cursed servants of Beast’s castle actually have some long lost family members living in the village like Mrs. Potts’ husband and Cogsworth’s wife. We learn at the beginning of the movie that it has been at least 10 years since the curse had been placed on Beast and his servants and, while the curse doesn’t allow them to age, it seems unlikely that their family members would stay the same age as well. Sweet dad celebrates his two sons with a ‘Calvin and Hobbes’-style tattoo

If you’ve ever talked to your friends about getting a tattoo, the one thing they’ll probably tell you is to make sure the tattoo is something meaningful.

For Douglas Pratt, father of two, that something meaningful comes in the form of his sons. That’s why for his first tattoo, Pratt got an image of him and his two sons sharing a happy moment in the style of Calvin and Hobbes.

The adorable tattoo received a lot of attention on Reddit and Imgur after Platt shared the image of it, and we can see why. Read more…

Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch was just tripped up by a horse-sized duck

What would you rather fight? A hundred duck-sized horses or a horse-sized duck?

It’s the question that has plagued Reddit for years, and today it stumped the next likely member of the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

With silly things like the future of marriage equality and women’s reproductive rights on the line, Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake took a moment out of Tuesday’s confirmation hearing to ask Judge Neil Gorsuch the aforementioned brainteaser at the prompting of his teenage son.

And what was this legal scholar’s answer? Was he definitive, like in his 2004 Oxford dissertation that reportedly opposed same-sex marriage? Nope. The man who will be challenged with breaking the current 4-4 Supreme Court stalemate couldn’t even answer this incredibly simple question.  Read more…

‘Banana for scale’ is put to bed by this very weird apartment listing

Apartment shopping online can be hard when you literally have no idea how big anything is. A picture of an empty room from a weird angle reveals little about what could actually fit inside.

A Redditor posted this picture of an apartment listing he found that provided an item to scale the size.

A double bed, is the item provided. Fully made. Pillows included. Placed quite nicely, actually. The listers used that for scale.

The thing about it is, it’s actually really helpful. Like yes, now it’s much easier to grasp the width of the hallway and the space available in the kitchen. Thank you. No further questions. Read more…

Amy Schumer has a message for the alt-right trolls who want to take her down

Amy Schumer has had more than her fill of trolls. The comedian, whose latest special debuted on Netflix March 7, was apparently targeted for negative reviews by alt-right trolls on the internet.

In a report from Splitsider, Megh Wright exposed a subreddit in which self-identified alt-right internet users planned to give Schumer’s special the lowest possible ratings. Cool plan, guys.

The Leather Special garnered overall positive reviews from critics, but user reviews were largely negative. This checks out when you see the threads calling users to action to bring Schumer’s rating down to 1 star. Read more…
